I am looking for your support in opposing the proposed Georgian Bay Geopark. This project will bring millions of tourists to Georgian Bay, harming sensitive habitats, endangering species and decreasing quality of life for permanent and seasonal residents.

While a UNESCO designation seems like it ought to provide a framework for protection, the Georgian Bay Geopark initiative is not being true to the spirit of UNESCO. It has been created to make money – not to protect Georgian Bay.

The geopark is a North Simcoe initiative. As it is within a 2 hour drive for over 5 million people, North Simcoe plans to serve as the gateway to launch tourists into Georgian Bay. The entire idea came from a property development organization looking to attract developers to Midland Blay Landing – to build a UNESCO Geopark Discovery Centre.

Who will bear the costs of the increased crowding, pollution and loss of habitats? All the parks, municipalities and seasonal and permanent residents across Georgian Bay. Who will reap the most profits? North Simcoe.

The geopark leadership team has no conservation plan and they have no plans to manage any of the geosites they are promoting. They plan for the management and costs of the sites they are promoting to be borne by the local parks and municipalities.
