Georgian Bay Geopark invites people to join them as they “explore” the creation of a UNESCO Global Geopark for Georgian Bay.

They pose a big question: Could Georgian Bay and the North Channel become a UNESCO global geopark?

We decided to take them up on their offer. Let’s explore!

We started by exploring Manitoulin Island.  All 9 municipalities on Manitoulin are united in their opposition to the geopark. So are all 6 First Nations represented by United Chiefs and Councils of Mnidoo Mnising. They demanded that Manitoulin be removed from the scope of the project. In June 2026, the Geopark tried “exploring” again, publishing a letter acknowledging “that references to Manitoulin Island in our materials may have created the impression of participation or support where none had been given”. In the same month, the Municipality of Central Manitoulin passed a motion opposing the geopark demanding that the Geopark redraw their maps to exclude Manitoulin Island and the North Channel.

Manitoulin Island has been explored. And the answer to the geopark’s big question? No.

Then we explored the North Channel. In August 2025, the Municipality of Huron Shores, sent an opposition letter urging that Manitoulin Island and the North Shore be removed from the proposed Geopark boundaries. They were joined in opposition by the Mississauga First Nation.

The North Channel has been explored. And the answer to the geopark’s big question? No.

Last of all we explored the eastern shore of Georgian Bay. The Township of the Archipelago, which represents 26% of the Georgian Bay shoreline opposes the geopark and has demanded to be removed from their maps. Wasauksing First Nation has written a letter of opposition and also wants to be removed from all maps. Then there is the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve. To become a UNESCO Global Geopark, there needs to be a partnership agreement between the geopark and the biosphere reserve. Instead, the Biosphere Reserve has written a letter of opposition. Given that it stretches almost 200 kilometers from the Severn River to the French River, that wiped out the entire Eastern coast.

The Eastern coast has been explored. And the answer to the geopark’s big question? No.

Hey Georgian Bay Geopark, you can stop exploring now. We’ve answered your question.

Georgian Bay and the North Channel will never be a UNESCO Global Geopark.
