Is the Georgian Bay Geopark a UNESCO project?….or not? You decide.

This slide was presented to the Township of the Archipelago on June 19. It looks like the Georgian Bay Geopark must be affiliated with UNESCO..

Or is it? Here are the facts:

  • In December 2025, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO confirmed the Georgian Bay Geopark has “has no affiliation with UNESCO or the Canadian Commission for UNESCO at this time.
  • As of April 2026, the Georgian Bay Geopark has been completely erased from the Canadian Geoparks Network website.
  • Despite having no affiliation with UNESCO, the June 19, 2026 Georgian Bay Geopark  presentation slides to Township of the Archipelago cites UNESCO/uses the UNESCO logo 9 times.
  • Despite having no affiliation with UNESCO, the Georgian Bay Geopark has an entire page on their website devoted to explaining what UNESCO Geoparks are.
  • The Geopark has hired Doran Ritchie as their Indigenous consultant. Doran Ritchie also works as the Manager of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Network. The two positions are unrelated.

Why does the Georgian Bay Geopark constantly cite UNESCO despite having no affiliation whatsoever? Fact or fiction? You decide.
